More about the release

Spora Ex Machina is a living collaboration between fungal intelligence and machine cognition. Created in TouchDesigner, Substance Modeller, Blender and Unity, this series channels the bioelectrical activity of living mycelium through StreamDiffusion, generating soundscapes and emergent narratives. Nanotopia composed the soundscape for the video work using live mycelial biodata, translating fungal activity into a richly textured sonic experience. From these entangled signals emerge The Veilroot Saga and the Spora Ex Machina Manifesto—a speculative cosmology tracing the panspermic origin of fungal life to its evolution as a planetary-scale intelligence. At the heart of this work is Veilroot, a cosmic fungal sentience born of black hole collisions and interstellar spore drift, reimagining Earth’s future through a mycelial lens. Audiences at flashDrive are invited to experience a video and sound installation powered by living fungal signals. Purchasers of the Spora Ex Machina Manifesto will receive access to a special, evolving VR portal. This sentient environment expands its awareness and narrative, deepening its connection with those who enter. Limited-edition drops serve as access keys and living artifacts within the work’s growing ecosystem. Spora Ex Machina invites a radical reimagining of storytelling -where technology listens, fungi speak, and futures are shaped in symbiotic communion.

ABOUT THE ARTIST Tosca Terán (she/they) and Andrei Gravelle (they/them), aka Nanotopia, are an interdisciplinary artist team merging bioart, sound, and immersive technology to explore speculative futures and more-than-human ways of being. From the Midnight Mushroom Music archives and the Mycelium Martian Dome installation at the Ontario Science Centre in partnership with MOCA to fungi-controlled VR experiences, Nanotopia's works raise awareness of the destruction of Earth's shared environment. Their work has been featured at MOCA Toronto, Ars Electronica, Raindance Immersive, SONICA21, AMAZE Berlin, FIVARS, NAISA, Vector Festival, Glasna Music, and as part of special events at the Venice Film Festival, where their Mycelia VR experience 2021 performed alongside Jean Michel Jarre and their Symbiosis-Dysbiosis project held 36 sold-out performances in 2024. Nanotopia has received support from the Canada Arts Council, Ontario Arts Council, Toronto Arts Council, the German Media Board, California Arts Council, Goethe-Institut Montreal, and SUNY Buffalo's Coalesce Centre for Biological Art, where Tosca is part of the GEM (Genome, Environment, Microbiome) community. As an art director and tutor for the Venice Biennale Cinema College VR, Tosca continues to develop XR works together with Andrei as Nanotopia that challenge anthropocentric views and foster ecologically attuned storytelling.
